the 26th taipei film festival announces the taipei film award nominations at the press conference. this year, 271 submissions were received, including 48 features, 49 documentaries, 157 short films, and 17 animations. after a vibrant discussion among the second-round judges, 31 films (15 features, 6 documentaries, 5 short films and 5 animations) received nominations. among the nominated films, the pig, the snake and the pigeon leads with 13 nominations, including best feature, best director, best screenplay, best actor, best supporting actress, and best supporting actor. it is followed by old fox with ten nominations and big with eight nominations.

the taipei film festival has set “a journey in spring” as the taiwan flagbearer in its international competition section. directed by peng tzu-hui and wang ping-wen, the film was shot on super 16 mm film stock and stars king jieh-wen and yang kuei-mei. the festival runs june 21-july 6 at the zhongshan hall, vieshow cinema xinyi and spot-huashan cinemas.

its other competition titles include: “beyond the fog,” by murase daichi; “brief history of a family,” by lin jianjie; “encounters,” by dmitry moiseev; “the featherweight,” by robert kolodny; “foremost by night,” by víctor iriarte; “humanist vampire seeking consenting suicidal person,” by ariane louis-seize; “my sunshine,” by okuyama hiroshi; “scream,” by kenzhebek shaikakov; and “who do i belong to,” by meryam joobeur.

the winners of the new talent competition will be decided by a jury that is headed by mainland chinese director and multiple berlinale silver bear winner wang xiaoshuai. other jurors include taiwan actor and director kai ko, festival selector, lim cheng-sim, laha mebow, the director who won the 2016 taipei film award grand prize for “lokah laqi” and sadai yuji, producer on “drive my car.”

the taipei film festival is in its 26th year in 2024. it continues to have two important competitions, namely the taipei film awards, commending taiwanese in the film industry, and the international new talent competition that commends new international directors. related activities are held for new taiwanese films, new directors and international exchange, including a festival preparatory school, summer surprise market, festival focus discussions, face-to-face meeting so people in the film industry, and a “film buff club” that will allow people to get close to creators and understand the context of creation. the taipei film festival’s aim continues be the encouragement and discovery of new film talent and create opportunities for the film and tv industry in taiwan.
